platelet rich plasma

PRP Facial Rejuvenation

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a nonsurgical treatment that utilizes blood drawn from a venipuncture technique from your arm.   A centrifuge machine later spins it down to harvest purified fluid that consists of a high volume of platelets.  This is injected into the tissue or used topically with microneedling techniques.

Platelet rich plasma has been used extensively for multiple purposes in medicine including heart surgery, joints, as well as wound care.  More recently, it has been utilized for facial and cosmetic rejuvenation. The reaction elicited by using high concentrations of platelets stimulates the release of growth factors, which can improve appearance, tone, and texture.

There are many studies which demonstrate benefits of PRP in terms of healing as well as collagen production.  Additional benefits are proposed for alopecia (hair loss).

A series of 4-5 treatments are recommended for maximal benefit.  This procedure may assist with tone, texture, and can tighten loose skin through collagen induction.

Treatments average approximately 90 minutes and are well tolerated with local numbing creams.  This is a phenomenal treatment for those looking to rejuvenate your face, neck, chest, and even hands.

Treatment Care

Pre-treatment instructions

  • Avoid deep tanning (tanning bed, tanning creams) 4 weeks before, and 4 weeks after the treatment. If you must go in the sun, use a sunscreen SPF 30 or higher with a mineral component (zinc/titanium).  Sun exposure can lead to pigmentary changes.

  • Avoid aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, or any blood thinners prior to treatment.  This will inhibit the effects of the platelets.

  • Avoid any irritating skin products 7 days prior to treatment.

  • It is recommended that you arrive with a clean face free of makeup if possible.

  • It is best that you refrain from tweezing or waxing (1 week prior).

  • Do NOT use accutane (6 months prior) or retinol prior to treatment (hold retinol for 7 days).  No recent peels or aggressive facial treatments close to the treatment.  If you have ever taken gold supplements or gold medication therapy please advise our office prior to treatment.

  •  DO NOT wear make-up, deodorant, perfumes or powder on the areas to be treated.

  •  If you have a history of herpes (cold sore), please inform our office so that we can prescribe suppressive therapy prior to your treatment.  PLEASE INFORM OUR OFFICE IF YOU HAVE A HISTORY OF COLD SORES.

Remember:   Hydrate the skin after treatment to achieve the best outcome.  Our aesthetician will be happy to discuss the best regimen post treatment.

Post- Treatment Instructions

  • Immediately after treatment, there may be redness and bumps at the treatment site. It is normal for the treated area to feel like sunburn.   Keep the area cool and hydrated.  Moisturizing ointment or Aquaphor is recommended post-treatment.   Avoid hot showers.  Hold retinol products for 5-7 days after the treatment.

  • Avoid makeup after the treatment for 24 hours if possible.   Use moisturizer frequently and freely on the treated area.

  • Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of dark or light spots. Use sunscreen SPF 30 or greater at all times throughout the course of treatment.

Is there downtime with platelet rich plasma treatments?

This procedure is well tolerated with minimal to no downtime.  You may experience some redness after the procedure but generally this will dissipate a few hours later.  It can be performed at different levels to help fit into your lifestyle.  Tell us your goals and let us help you make the best decision for your lifestyle.

When can I restart my retinol?

Our patient's love our Tretinol® and other skincare products, however, we usually recommend holding any retinol products for 5-7 days.  We can advise you of this at your visit.

How often is a platelet rich plasma treatment done?

Platelet rich plasma treatments can be done every 4 weeks until the desired effect is obtained.  We generally recommend 4-5 sessions to optimize results. Maintenance treatments in the future are recommended.

When can I see results from platelet rich plasma treatment?

While most patients will benefit from a series of treatments, you should see results after one treatment.  Collagen production continues to improve for approximately  3 months after your final treatment.  We recommend a series of treatments for maximal benefits.
