Microneedling/Collagen Induction Therapy

Microneedlng (also known as microchanneling or collagen induction therapy) is a nonsurgical treatment that utilizes a device with multiple fine gauged needles to penetrate the layers of the skin and incite a reaction that may stimulate collagen production.  Through this process, it can assist in the removal of surface pigmentation, acne scars, and fine lines or wrinkles.    The skin is generally treated with a powerful numbing cream prior to the treatment.  This allows for a pain free procedure.  A power driven device then creates small channels into the dermis which triggers the body's healing mechanism (thus enhancing collagen and elastin production).   A series of 4-5 treatments are recommended for maximal benefit.  This procedure may assist with tone, texture, and can tighten loose skin through collagen induction.   It may even benefit those with pitted acne or pox scars as well as stretch marks.

The treatment offers visible results promptly with a short period of downtime.  Treatments average approximately 45 minutes and are well tolerated with local numbing creams.  This is a phenomenal treatment for those looking to rejuvenate your face, neck, chest, and even hands.

Treatment Care

Pre-treatment instructions

  • Avoid deep tanning (tanning bed, tanning creams) 4 weeks before, and 4 weeks after the treatment. If you must go in the sun, use a sunscreen SPF 30 or higher with a mineral component (zinc/titanium).  Sun exposure can lead to pigmentary changes.

  • If you are tan or have a darker skin type, we can utilize different setting that can assist you in your skin renewal needs.   We will provide a complementary skin care consultation on the same day as your procedure.

  • Avoid any irritating skin products 7 days prior to treatment.

  • It is recommended that you arrive with a clean face free of makeup if possible.

  • It is best that you refrain from tweezing or waxing (1 week prior).

  • Do NOT use accutane (6 months prior) or retinol prior to treatment (hold retinol for 7 days).  No recent peels or aggressive facial treatments close to the treatment.  If you have ever taken gold supplements or gold medication therapy please advise our office prior to treatment.

  •  DO NOT wear make-up, deodorant, perfumes or powder on the areas to be treated.

  •  If you have a history of herpes (cold sore), please inform our office so that we can prescribe suppressive therapy prior to your treatment.  PLEASE INFORM OUR OFFICE IF YOU HAVE A HISTORY OF COLD SORES.

Remember:   Hydrate the skin after treatment to achieve the best outcome.  Our aesthetician will be happy to discuss the best regimen post treatment.

Post- Treatment Instructions

  • Immediately after treatment, there may be redness and bumps at the treatment site. It is normal for the treated area to feel like sunburn.   Keep the area cool and hydrated.  Moisturizing ointment or Aquaphor are recommended post-treatment.   Avoid hot showers.  Hold retinol products for 5-7 days after the treatment.

  • Avoid makeup after the treatment for 24 hours if possible.   Use moisturizer frequently and freely on the treated area.

  • Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of dark or light spots. Use sunscreen SPF 30 or greater at all times throughout the course of treatment.

Is there downtime with microneedling?

This procedure is well tolerated with minimal to no downtime.  You may experience some redness after the procedure but generally this will dissipate a few hours later.  It can be performed at different levels to help fit into your lifestyle.  Tell us your goals and let us help you make the best decision for your lifestyle.

When can I restart my retinol?

Our patient's love our Tretinol® and other skincare products, however, we usually recommend holding any retinol products for 5-7 days.  We can advise you of this at your visit.

How often is a treatment done?

Microneedling treatments can be done every 3-4 weeks until the desired effect is obtained.  We generally recommend 4-5 sessions to optimize results. Maintenance treatments in the future are recommended. Stretch marks may benefit from an average of  6-8 sessions.

When will I see results from microneedling treatment?

While most patients will benefit from a series of treatments, you should see results after one treatment. Collagen production continues to improve for approximately  3 months after your final treatment.  We recommend a series of treatments for maximal benefits.
